5 LESSONS I’VE LEARNED BEHIND THE CHAIR (THAT CHANGED ME)

When I started in this industry, I thought I was just learning to cut, color, and style hair. But the real education happens behind the chair — moment by moment, person by person.

Here are five lessons I’ve learned that have shaped not just my career, but who I am:

1. Everyone wants to feel seen.

It’s never just about the hair. People sit in our chairs for connection, comfort, and confidence. Listening — really listening — is often more powerful than the best haircut.

2. Perfection doesn’t exist — but care does.

There’s no such thing as perfect, especially in beauty. But there is intentionality. People remember how you made them feel, not just how you styled their bangs.

3. You can’t pour from an empty cup.

I’ve learned (the hard way) that burnout is real. Protecting my energy, taking time off, and setting boundaries aren’t selfish — they’re necessary for longevity in this industry.

4. Change is constant — lean into it.

New techniques, new tools, new client needs — everything evolves. The most successful stylists are the ones who keep learning, adapting, and growing.

5. This job is a gift.

We get to be part of people’s big days, their new beginnings, their “I need a change” moments. It’s intimate, personal, and powerful. That privilege never gets old.

Every stylist has a story. These lessons are mine — and I’m still learning every single day.
